Our Mission

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
[20] teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Matthew 28:19-20 (KJV)

Mission Statement Interpretation

The mission of the Hill Street Baptist Church ministries is to bring persons into a saving and redemptive relationship as Disciples of Jesus Christ. We are a Spiritual body whose only foundation is the Word of God. We fulfill our ministry as we proclaim and teach, pray and worship, forgive and reconcile. As we live by Christ’s example, we empower others to carry out the commands of God. We seek only to be God’s servants as agents of healing and wholeness in a wounded and fragmented world.

Vision Summation

A vision statement is not the announcement of the construction of a building, but rather the construction of souls for the kingdom. A vision is a projection of the spiritual focus to be implemented to enhance and build the people of God to better serve God. The church still has a mission before us, which is to hold up to the Blood-Stained Banner of Christ Jesus. If we are to be an effective church, each one of us must be fully committed to the work of the Gospel.

Our Pastor

Pastor Keith Ogden

Reverend Dr. Keith Anthony Ogden is the Senior Pastor of the historic Hill Street Baptist Church, Asheville, North Carolina. Hill Street Baptist Church is located in the National Historic Community District of [Montford], Asheville, North Carolina. HSBC is one of the most respected and leading churches in the greater Asheville, North Carolina Region. Because of the churches African American heritage and cultural diversity the church has embraced the biblical model of all peoples worshipping and witnessing together for the Glory of God.

Since coming to Hill Street Baptist Church, Pastor Ogden has been very active in the community of Asheville. He’s been featured on numerous occasions in the local Citizen-Times newspaper for speaking to issues as they relate to the Asheville community, while holding the local and political government accountable for its promises. He is a former columnist for the Religion section of Asheville Citizen-Times newspaper, which is distributed to thousands of homes all over Ashevile and Western North Carolina.

Pastor Ogden is a humble and diligent shepherd, who unselfishly gives of himself, his membership, and the community. Because of his God-given ability to be a creative thinker, Pastor Ogden uses creative concepts to promote the gospel of Jesus Christ to a loss and dying world without succumbing to the gimmicks of the world.

Pastor Ogden is a published author and has completed his first publication which was released in August of 2009 entitled [Walking in the Underserved]. Dr. Robert Smith, Professor of Christian Preaching of Beeson Divinity School wrote: Dr. Keith Ogden revisits the “road less traveled” this is the road that leads to compassion. In an age of combat compassion is a balm in the context of ecclesiastical conflict that can make the wounded whole. Bishop John Richard Bryant, Bishop Walter Scott Thomas, Dr. Gardner C. Taylor, Dr. Gary L. Williams, and Dr. Howard-John Wesley noted that this publication is a must read for every Christian Believer. His book can be purchased via the book page, church book stores such as: Alfred Street Baptist Church, Alexandria, VA, and First Baptist Church of Mandarin, Jacksonville, FL.

Hill Street Baptist ChurchPastor Ogden is working on his next publication “MY BIBLE—MY MERCY” in collaboration with noted editor and publisher, the Reverend Darryl Simms for his Bible Study Manual “MY BIBLE—MY MANHOOD.” He is the editor for Sound of Trumpet Volume One and Sound of the Trumpet Again.

In 2008, Pastor Ogden was recommended by Dr. Major L. Jemison, Dr. Jeremiah Wright, Dr. Gardner C. Taylor and Dr. Lance Watson, and selected to participate in the “Pastoral Excellence Program” (PEP) with the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention. The PEP is a three year program and offers the following: collaborative service with hosts in Guyana, Jamaica, and Italy; Participation in peer groups; and investment in learning through didactics and Internet studies and the Development of a deeper global understanding of ministry.

Tithing Affirmations

We are a tithing church because the Word teaches tithing, our experience gives witness to tithing, and our obedience to God requires tithing.

Then let us bring our tithes and offerings to the Lord as he has prospered us, for the "tenth shall be holy unto the Lord."

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. - Mark 10:45 NIV

Covenant

Hill Street BaptistHaving been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour; and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God, angels and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.

We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge and holiness; to give it a place in our affections, prayers and services above every organization of human origin; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrine; to contribute cheerfully and regularly, as God has prospered us, towards its expenses, for the support of a faithful and evangelical ministry among us, the relief of the poor and the spread of the Gospel throughout the world. In case of difference of opinion in the church, we will strive to avoid a contentious spirit, and if we cannot unanimously agree, we will cheerfully recognize the right of the majority to govern.

We also engage to maintain family and secret devotion; to study diligently the word of God; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintance; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be kind and just to those in our employ, and faithful in the service we promise others; endeavoring in the purity of heart and good will towards all men to exemplify and commend our holy faith.

Hill Street BaptistWe further engage to watch over, to pray for, to exhort and stir up each other unto every good word and work; to guard each other’s reputation, not needlessly exposing the infirmities of others; to participate in each other’s joys, and with tender sympathy bear one another’s burdens and sorrows; to cultivate Christian courtesy; to be slow to give or take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, being mindful of the rules of the Saviour in the eighteenth chapter of Matthew, to secure it without delay; and through life, amid evil report, and good report, to seek to live to the glory of God, who hath called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.

When we remove from this place, we engage as soon as possible to unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s word.
